Best Time to Visit the Basque Country — Honest Breakdown by Season

The Basque Country is beautiful any time of year. But every season has its own price, its own weather, and its own opportunities. I live here — here's the honest picture.

April — June: the best choiceOne of the best periods to visit. All attractions are already open — no heat yet. Temperatures of 13-20°C: comfortable for walking, but rain and wind are common. That said, some locations are especially stunning in this kind of weather. Gaztelugatxe in fog and clouds is a completely different experience.Accommodation is significantly cheaper than in summer, crowds are small. Too early for beach time — but perfect for everything else.
July — August: peak season with everything that comes with itHeat around 24°C and above. You need to plan your moves carefully — not all locations are suitable in the midday heat, better to choose indoor spaces during the hottest hours. Locals themselves go on vacation. Accommodation prices go up 2-4x. Lots of festivals and events.Insider tip: even in this heat the ocean can be cold — around 16-17°C. It all depends on the current. If this is the only time you can travel — go. But be prepared for the costs and the crowds.
September — November: shoulder seasonTemperatures of 16-25°C — ideal. The heat drops, prices are moderate, everything is still open. The region is actively alive.A note on October: the grape harvest begins in Rioja. Getting to experience a real harvest is something you don't forget.
Late November — March: off season0 to 13°C, heavy rain and wind. The region slows down, some attractions close. Prices are low — that's a plus. You can travel, but you need to know exactly what to see and where to go. In winter the region opens up differently — but only if you know where to look. We do.
