Bilbao
Yes, the regional capital. And yes — it can disappoint.
Bilbao was historically an industrial city. Ports, factories, working class. It only became a modern art hub quite recently — and you can feel it. The Guggenheim Museum, the Puppy dog at the entrance, and the Maman spider — absolutely worth seeing. The city is clean and actively being developed.
But if you're expecting wow moments around every corner — they won't be there. The museum does all the heavy lifting for the entire city.
A better use of your time: Castro Urdiales — 40 minutes from Bilbao. A medieval port, a Gothic cathedral right by the water, fresh seafood restaurants. Now that's a different story.
Vitoria-Gasteiz
This is the official capital of the Basque Country. Not Bilbao — many people are surprised.
There's an old town, there's a central square. And that's pretty much it. If you're heading to this area — Vitoria can safely be skipped.
Go to Laguardia instead. A fortress city with kilometers of tunnels underground, medieval walls, and wine straight from a cave. The difference is enormous.
Rioja Wineries
This is where you need to be careful — and it's the most common tourist trap.
90% of wineries have nothing interesting to offer. They'll show you barrels, storage tanks, vineyards that are freely accessible anyway — and a tasting room. The production process, the harvest, wine being made — most likely none of that will be there.
The worthwhile wineries are found through experience. You can drive hundreds of kilometers and leave disappointed.

San Fermín in Pamplona — a week on your own
One of the most famous festivals in the world — known globally thanks to Hemingway. But honestly: there's enough to do for 1-2 days. The rest of the time will be wasted — unless you're a teenager who enjoys bar-hopping all day.
Pamplona is a beautiful city. But it's not worth seeing without a guide — the city reveals itself completely differently when you know where to look.
The remaining days? That's the whole region. Basque Country, coastline, mountains, France right next door. We'll build an itinerary around your dates and pace →
